October 2014 Birchbox Review

Disclaimer, this post contains referral links.2014-06-11 18_FotorIt’s Birchbox time again! This month they were celebrating the fan girl in each of us; sharing their passions and obsessions, and encouraging us to do the same.

Birchbox is only $10 a month and they send you 5-8 (usually sample size) products to try out. If you end up loving the sample, you can purchase the full size version in their shop. They also have a crazy good points system so you can rack up credit for significant discounts. It’s an auto renewing subscription which you pay monthly for, or pay for a full year at once (for a discount). You can also cancel any time.

Here’s the first look at my October 2014 BirchboxBirchbox_October2014_box

Screenshot 2014-10-17 18.26.37Here is a breakdown of the products.

Birchbox_October2014_product1

Macadamia Professional™ Flawless Cleansing Conditioner – (value $15) – A multipurpose, no-suds conditioner which is supposed to cleanse and soften hair, plus cut blow-dry time. I’m not all that excited about this. I am pretty loyal to the conditioner I use and like, plus I don’t blow-dry my hair so that benefit is lost on me. I’ll probably swap this. Having said that, I’m a little disappointed that this was the highest value item in the box.

BORGHESE Fango Brillante – (value $3.58) – This mud mask is infused with a blend of vitamins and minerals to brighten oily and congested skin, purifying pores, clearing up blemishes, and banishing dullness.  I was skeptical at first because this just sounded too good to be true. It was the first product from this box that I actually tried out, and I might be in love with it. First of all, my face felt like it was burning when the mask was on, which was a huge drawback because it was super uncomfortable. It actually made me wonder if I was having an alergic reaction to it because I had never used a face mask that felt like that. But, I kept it on for about seven minutes. You guys, the result was kind of amazing. The next morning I noticed a significant clearing of the breakout I had been experiencing on my chin, and my skin just looked brighter. I was really impressed! The only thing I’m not impressed by is the price tag. A regular sized pot of this stuff sells for $64.

Birchbox_October2014_product2

Benefit The POREfessional – (value $3.90) – An oil-free balm that shrinks the look of pores, smooths skin, and mattifies shine. I don’t have a big problem with pore size, but regardless I think that this probably acts much like a makeup primer. I love primers, so I’m sure I’ll use this.

Skin&Co Roma TRUFFLE THERAPY™ BODY MILK Super Enriching Anti-Aging Truffle Body Milk – (value $1.64 for 2 packs) –  This is an olive oil and shea butter lotion, rich in antioxidants, which hydrates and softens skin.

Lord & Berry Paillettes Eye Pencil – (value $4.50) –  Oh look, it’s another black eyeliner pencil. This is a blendable pencil, studded with bits of silver shimmer. In the last six months, Birchbox has sent me four black eyeliners. Seriously Birchbox? Stop with the black eyeliner already. Please, and thank you.

IMG_20141017_112949

I estimate the value of my October Birchbox at $28.62, and though it isn’t the highest value Birchbox ever, it was still a good deal. I found one product I really like, and another eyeliner to add to the growing pile (though if I get one more black eyeliner I may scream). I do hope next months Birchbox is more exciting though!

Also, as a side note I was pretty disappointed by my sample choice experience this month. I had requested the Mally Beauty High-Shine Liquid lipstick in a pretty melon shade, but I guess they ran out and weren’t able to fulfill my request. It was a total bummer, because I was really excited about that item in particular. They still seem to be experiencing a lot of kinks with their sample choice program, and I sure hope they get them ironed out soon.

October Julep Maven Review

Disclaimer, this post contains referral links.

IMG_4576

Julep Maven is a nail polish and beauty box. Every month you have a choice between several curated style profiles or you can customize your box. If you’d like to customize your box, I suggest signing up for a 3 month prepaid subscription! Julep Maven is one of my favorite subscription boxes for a few reasons. Every month they create and release a new line of polish, all built around a theme. I think it’s a great idea. Also, I’m a big fan of the fact that their polish formulas are vegan, and 5-free.

For October, they introduced The Black Magic Collection.

I’ll admit, I was underwhelmed by this collection. I guess I was expecting something more “Halloween-y” for October. Most of the collection looked similar to other colors that I already have. Since I’m not lucky enough to have a skipable My Maven account, I was still able to select a few colors that I liked enough to customize into my box.

Julep Maven subscription details:

The Cost: $24.99 a month ($19.99 a month with a 3-month subscription). Both options are customizable for new Mavens. I totally recommend the 3-month subscription. That’s what I have, and I love being able to pick exactly what I want, and getting the lowest price.

The Products: Nail polish and beauty items.

Ships to: US and Canada

Here’s the first look inside my October Julep Maven Box.

JulepMaven_October2014_firstlook

Here are the colors that I selected this month.

Photo Sep 23, 7 02 07 PMHere is the breakdown of what I received in this month’s box:

JulepMaven_October2014_product1

Nancy – (Value $14) – From Julep: Silvery sage metallic.

  • I love this color. It depends on the light but sometimes it leans silver, other times it leans green. It’s really pretty!

Ledi – (Value $14) – From Julep: Black pearl shimmer

  • My collection was lacking in black, so I was happy to add this shimmery black shade to the mix.

JulepMaven_October2014_gloss

Julep Lip Gloss- (Value $20) – I selected the color “Polished”

  • I had never tried Julep’s lip glosses, and was excited to try them. They released two new shades, and I selected “Polished” as you see in the pic above. The finish is actually a little more pink than the picture suggests, but I still kind of wish I had selected the other new shade. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll pick that one up later.

I chose the following as ad-ons:

JulepMaven_October2014_addons

Queen Ann – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – Lilac confetti microglitter

Misti – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – From Julep: Smoky blue-grey crème

  • JulepMaven_October2014_nailstickers

Cat Nail Decals – these were part of the Halloween theme, and aren’t actually offered for sale on the site (as far as I can tell). They’re super cute!

Because I purchased three add-ons, I received a beauty freebie. They sent:

JulepMaven_October2014_bonys

Catrina – (Value $14) – From Julep: Marigold yellow crème

Teri – (Value $14) – From Julep: Tropical coral pink crème

  • This is way prettier in person then the swatches on their site suggest. I had been wanting a pretty coral pink color, and am really happy this was part of the bonus this month.

So that was my box this month!

JulepMaven_October2014_products

If you’re new to Julep Maven, don’t forget to use code FREEBOX to receive your welcome box for free (you just pay for shipping or get free shipping when you sign up for a 3 month subscription).

I subscribed for another three months, so I’m looking forward to seeing what November and December have in store. I have high hopes for some really pretty finishes and festive colors!

Are you guys subscribed to Julep Maven? Do you love it? What did you think of your October Julep Maven Box?

Fall Walmart Beauty Box Review

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_box

Walmart recently released a brand new subscription box called the Walmart Beauty Box. I was super excited to try it, as it is an awesome deal. This is subscription based, and auto ships once a quarter (four times a year). The box itself is completely free, you just pay $5 for shipping. I signed up in time to receive the Fall box. I’ve seen a few different versions of this box, and here is what I received in mine.

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_firstlook

At first look, I was really happy with this box!

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_product1

Covergirl Glowing Nights Glosstinis nail polish – (value $3.79) – I love getting nail polishes in subscription boxes. Even though I don’t really love this color, I’m sure I’ll use it.

L’Oreal Colour Riche Glossy Balm – (value $7.99) – This lip crayon is supposed to give lips a high dose of pigmented shine, while smoothing and conditioning to keep lips soft. I received the Lovely Mocha shade, and initially didn’t think I would like it. But then I put it on, and I really like the color. I’m glad this is the shade I received. I liked that it wend on easily, and didn’t dry out my lips. It just isn’t very long-lasting.

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_product2

Pink Friday by Nicki Minaj Eau de Parfum – (value $1.00?) – I guessed on the value of this. I’m super picky about the scents I wear, and though this doesn’t smell bad, it just isn’t my style.

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_product3

Secret Clinical Strength Completely Clean Invisible Solid – (value $7.92) – This was the product I was most happy to receive. I’ve used this product before, but don’t typically purchase it because it’s kind of expensive. I also love that it’s full-sized!

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_product4

Dove Oxygen Moisture Shampoo & Dove Oxygen Moisture Conditioner – (value $0.41 each) – These are a great size, and will be nice to have for my travel kit. I generally like Dove products, so I’m sure I’ll like these too.

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_product5

Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Hair Treatment – (value $1.40) – I’ve never used an oil treatment on my hair. But, it’s definitely on the drier side right now, so I’m going to use this ASAP.

Fall_Walmart_BeautyBox_product6

Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup  – I like that this sample card has all the shades, allowing you to find your perfect match. That’s often one of the hardest parts of buying drugstore foundation, so I appreciate this method of sampling.

L’Oreal YouthCode Pore Vanisher – This is supposed to minimize the appearance of pores, and actually shrink pore size in one month.

Overall, I’m very happy with the Walmart Beauty box. I estimate its value at around $23.00, and considering it only cost $5, I’d say that is a pretty good value. I love that there were two full-sized products (the lip crayon, and the deodorant). The deodorant itself is worth the value of the box alone. I also like the fact that these boxes are seasonal, and will change based on seasonal beauty needs. I’m excited to see what they put together for winter!

September 2014 Birchbox Review

Disclaimer, this post contains referral links. September2014_Birchbox_box

I love Birchbox! This month they celebrated their 4-year anniversary, sent out adorable boxes with the theme “Fresh Paint,” and in my opinion killed it in regard to the samples. This was hands down my best box yet.

Here’s the first look at my September 2014 Birchbox. I should have received five products this month, but my box was missing the eyeliner. No big deal, their shipping me out a replacement.

September2014_Birchbox_firstlook

September2014_Birchbox_unveiled

Screenshot 2014-09-10 09.44.14

September2014_Birchbox_shavecream

Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream -(value $2.94) – I’ve seen it around for months, but had never tried it. So this is a win for me. It’s made in the U.S. with eco-friendly ingredients, and the non-drying formula is supposed to give you a close shave without leaving your legs devoid of moisture. It’s also designed not to foam up, which is an interesting concept.

September2014_Birchbox_peel

Real Chemistry Luminous 3-minute Peel – (value $4.80) – When I realized this was in my box I was thrilled. I’d seen this sent out in past boxes to other subscribers and was really interested in trying it. Needless to say, I am beyond happy that I get to. Lately, I’ve really been trying to nail down a skin care regamin that works for me, and I’ve been looking to incorporate a peel into the mix. I hope that I love this!

September2014_Birchbox_perfume

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Gold Couture – (value $1.35) – I’m typically pretty on the fence when I receive fragrance samples, as I’m really picky about my scents. But I really enjoy other fragrances from Juicy Couture, so I am actually really happy to receive another one. This smells great, and is said to include a blend of wild berries, honeysuckle, and has warm caramel notes.

September2014_Birchbox_bodywash

Rituals Foaming Shower Gel –  (value $3.75) – Made with rice milk and cherry-blossom. I’ve never seen shower gel in a foam dispenser before. Having used it, I like the effectiveness of the product, but I really disliked this particular scent. I seem to be in the minority though, based off the online reviews people really like the scent, lol.

September2014_Birchbox_chapstick

Chap Stick duel-ended Hydration Lock Moisturize & Renew – (value $3.49) – This was the Birchbox Find that was included as an extra in my box this month, and was a complete surprise. It wasn’t listed in my sneek peek when I looked earlier this week. It’s a brand new product from Chap Stick. I love that it’s duel ended – one each side serving a different purpose. I love this chapstick, and I’m sure I’ll buy more when this runs out.

I estimate the value of this box at $31.33 (I included the value of the eyeliner pencil, which I didn’t receive, but which is being shipped to me). I can honestly say that I love and will use everything in my September Birchbox. It is by far the best one I have received yet. Bravo, Birchbox! You killed it on this one. And from what I can tell, everyone seemed to get pretty awesome boxes this month. I hope they keep it up.

September 2014 POPSUGAR Must Have Box Review

Disclaimer, this post contains referral links.
August2014_Popsugar_logo

Confession…I intended to only try one month of the POPSUGAR Must Have Box, but I forgot (at least that’s what I’m telling myself) to cancel it. But honestly, I’m really glad I didn’t. I really love getting this box, and even though I consider it a bit expensive for a monthly box, I’m really considering continuing my subscription. I’m always so impressed by the quality and value of the boxes I receive, and this month was no different. I think the variety of items is what I love the most.

September2014_Popsugar_info card

According to the info card, September’s box was inspired by autumn leaves, long walks, new tunes, back to school, fashion week, and football. Some of my favorite things about fall!

September2014_Popsugar_infocard2

POPSUGAR Must Have is women’s subscription service that is curated by the editors at POPSUGAR.  Typically you can expect to receive a wide variety of items including beauty products, home goods, food items, and other miscellaneous items. Each month is $39.99/month. Currently if you subscribe, you’ll receive the October box. However, they are in the midst of a planned site outage for the next week, as it appears they are upgrading it and potentially preparing to release new box varieties! I’m excited to see what they’ll come up with next, so don’t forget to come back next week to check out their new site.

September2014_Popsugar_square

And, here’s a breakdown of the items I received:

September2014_Popsugar_scarf

Tilo Scarf – (Value $125.00) – This was the spoiler item for the September box. And seriously? The value of this scarf alone makes the entire box worth it. It’s pretty high-end too, is hand-dyed, and is just beautiful. I can see it being worn a lot during these fall months. It’s something that I probably would have never bought for myself, but am really happy to have.

September2014_Popsugar_nike

Nike $20 gift card– (Value $20) – This was one of the special extras that were included in the box, but honestly it is one of my favorite items from the box! I’ll get this out of the way first by saying that I am totally biased when it comes to Nike. They’re headquartered in my home town, and I have family that work there. So, I’ve always loved Nike. Having said that, I’ll totally use this gift card. I like that it is actually a true gift card (no minimum purchase), and includes free shipping. It is intended to promote their Nike Pro Bra line (hence the measuring tape), but I think I’ll use it to design a pair of Nike ID shoes. I’ve wanted to do that for a while. What do you guys think of these?

Screenshot 2014-09-11 12.08.41

September2014_Popsugar_headphones

Nicole Miller Stereo Earbuds – (Value $20) – These are fun, and I like that they come with three different ear-cap sizes so you can find your perfect fit. I also like that they’re blue, that’s my favorite color.

September2014_Popsugar_hairspray

Oribe Superfine Purse Size Hair Spray – (Value $21.50) – This is apparently a celebrity favorite. It is medium hold, and isn’t supposed to flake or dull hair styles. At $21.50 for a purse sized version, it had better be amazing! I’m not sure I’d ever buy it, but I’ll definitely use it.

September2014_Popsugar_chocolate

Ghiradelli Milk Chocolate Sea Salt & Almond Minis – (Value $5.95) – You had me at sea salt and almonds. I don’t think you can ever go wrong receiving chocolate. I have actually had these before. I live in San Francisco, and Ghiradelli is a local brand. These minis are perfect for a sweet treat, and come in a handful of other great varieties. Though I loved this version, I’m really excited to pick up a bag of Milk & Caramel, as well as the Milk Chocolate Toffee Crisp versions.

September2014_Popsugar_cardsandpencils

Rifle Paper Co. Garance Dore Assorted Girls Set  – (Value $18.00) – Don’t get me wrong, I love most everything from Rifle Paper Co. But, I just don’t love these particular cards. They’re just not my style. I’ll probably gift them.

Letter C Design Gold Foil Arrow Pencils – (Value $5.00) –  These pencils are definitely cute, and I could see how they would be great for someone in school. But I just don’t have a use for a bunch of #2 pencils. Combined with the card set above, these would make for a cute gift set.

September2014_Popsugar_brownie

Urban Remedy Almond Brownie – (Value $6.00) – This is a 100% organic, raw brownie. I like that there are no processed ingrediants in this snack. Urban Remedy is mostly known for their juices and juice cleanse programs. This came with a $10 off of a $50 purchase coupon, which I may actually use.

So, that was the September POPSUGAR Must Have Box! I am again really impressed by the value of this box, and the variety of items was really fun! Overall, September’s box was a hit for me.  I calculate the value of  this box at $231.45 (including the value of the two gift cards) which is a really tremendous value!

What did you guys think of the September POPSUGAR Must Have Box? What was your favorite item?

Julep Maven is a nail polish and beauty box. Every month you have a choice between several curated style profiles or you can customize your box. For September, they introduced The Art Walk Collection.

Initially, I had mixed feelings about this collection, but the more I looked at it the more I liked it. This is definitely a transition month into fall, so I expected less bright, and more muted colors. Is it just me, or does this collection also kind of scream an 80’s vibe? I was born in the 80’s though, so I can definitely get behind this. I have also really been interested in the satin finishes, and there were at least three of those featured this month.

Here’s the first look inside my September Julep Maven Box.

Here are the colors that I selected this month.

And, here is the first look at my September Maven Box.

JulepMaven_Sep2014_2

Here is the breakdown of what I received in this month’s box:

JulepMaven_Sep2014_4

Erin– (Value $14) – From Julep: Oyster grey crème.

  • I love grey polishes, and really didn’t have any in my collection. This is a really nice creme finish, and I’m excited to have it.

Quinn – (Value $14) – From Julep: Charcoal purple satin

  • As mentioned before, I’m really interested in different finishes right now, so this purple satin was right up my alley.

JulepMaven_Sep2014_5

Ryan – (Value $14) – From Julep: Overcast teal satin

  • I’m not as in love with this as I thought I would be, but I also think it’s a color that will grow on me the more I use it.

Ana – (Value $14) – From Julep: White jagged glitter top coat

  • Ana was part of this collection, but was only available as an add-on. I am in love with this top coat. It’s a little edgy, and I love that it’s white.

JulepMaven_Sep2014_9

Julep also released a new line of lip products this month called Plush Pout Lip Crayons. I feel like lip crayons have become a trend lately, and I was excited to see if Julep’s version was any better than the alternatives on the market.  These are supposed to be full-coverage lip crayons with a moisturizing core, and long-lasting with a semi-gloss finish.

I ordered the Magenta Plum color, but actually received the Almond Nude shade.  I was a little disappointed, but it wasn’t that big of a deal because they’re shipping me the correct color, and I get to keep this one. Typically, this type of nude shade wouldn’t work with my skin tone, so I haven’t tried it yet. I’m still debating whether or not I want to keep this one or trade/gift it to someone who would enjoy it more. I’m super excited to try out the Magenta Plum color once I actually receive it!

I chose the following as ad-ons:

JulepMaven_Sep2014_6

Chloe – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – Warm cocoa frost

Lola – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – From Julep: Moonlit night blue satin

  • Lola is a beautiful midnight blue! I can see this being a favorite for fall.

Because I purchased three add-ons (including Ana), I received a beauty freebie. They sent:

JulepMaven_Sep2014_7

Daria – (Value $14) – From Julep: Dark slate grey crème

Candace – (Value $14) – From Julep: Golden chocolate microglitter

So that was my box this month!

If you’re new to Julep Maven, don’t forget to use code FREEBOX to receive your welcome box for free (you just pay for shipping or get free shipping when you sign up for a 3 month subscription).

This month was the last of my pre-paid three-month subscription. I’m still debating whether or not I will continue my subscription or not. I probably will, but just haven’t decided for sure yet.

Are you guys subscribed to Julep Maven? Do you love it? What did you think of your September Julep Maven Box?

August 2014 MeUndies Review

Disclaimer: This post contains referral links.

We received our monthly MeUndies subscriptions in the mail a few weeks ago, so admittedly I’m a little late on posting this (sorry). Is it weird that I’m always this happy to receive underwear in the mail?

At this point I sound like a broker record, but MeUndies are the best underwear ever! Seriously. If you don’t believe me just order a pair.

I should clarify, that you don’t actually have to “subscribe,” to try out a pair or two. You can totally buy as many pair as you want straight off their website, without subscribing. But, if you do love them then you can subscribe, get a pair auto shipped to you every month, and get a discount off the per pair price ($16 for subscribers versus $20 for non subscribers).

Both my husband and I subscribe to MeUndies. You have a choice of getting the color of the month, or selecting which color you actually want. They release the new color of the month on the 1st of every month and ship around the 5th, so you have a few days to decide what you want. For August, I selected the color of the month again, and my husband selected one of their standards – black. I think it’s kind of funny that my husband doesn’t ever pick the color of the month, but I guess I also understand why some guys wouldn’t want to walk around wearing polka dot briefs, lol.

Here’s what we got in our August MeUndies shipment. As you can see, this month they included a fun pair of wayfarer style sunglasses to match their color of the month! I’m glad that I picked the color of the month, because I’m not sure if I would have received this extra if I hadn’t.

August2014_MeUndies_1

The Box: MeUndies

Cost: $16.00 for subscribers ($20 for non-subscribers)

What You Get: A pair of underwear shipped to you once a month. (My husband and I each have a subscription, but we have them under the same name/account so they bill and ship together).

Ships to: Everywhere!

Shipping Cost: FREE for orders shipped to the U.S. or Canada/ $12 shipped to anywhere else

Referral Program –  Share your link via email, Facebook, or twitter and give your friends 20% off. You receive $20 every time they buy.

August 2014 POPSUGAR Must Have Box Review

August2014_Popsugar_logo

I’ve been tempted to try the POPSUGAR Must Have Box for a while now. I caved this month, and after stalking my FedEx tracking number I can finally say that I have my first box in my hands! And, oh my gosh, I love everything in it!

August2014_Popsugar_first look

POPSUGAR Must Have is women’s subscription service that is curated by the editors at POPSUGAR.  Typically you can expect to receive a wide variety of items including beauty products, home goods, food items, and other miscellaneous items. Each month is $39.99/month. Often, they are running a discount code, and currently you can use the code MustHaveYT to get $10 off your first month! Currently if you subscribe, you’ll receive the September box (the August box is sold out).

Here’s the first look:

August2014_Popsugar_firstlook2

And, here’s a breakdown of the items I received:

Kendra Scott Elisa Necklace in Black Cat’s Eye – (Value $50) – I’ve been eyeing Kendra Scott jewelry for a long time, so I was super excited to see this included in the box this month. POPSUGAR sent out either this necklace, or a pair of earrings. Originally I was hoping to receive the earrings, but now that I have the necklace in person, I love it, and am so happy to add it to my jewelry collection! It’s the perfect size, is well made, and will go with everything. As a bonus with this item everyone also received a 20% off coupon code for our next purchase at kendrascott.com. I’m definitely going to have to use this.

August2014_Popsugar_product7

Paddywax Ocean Tide + Sea Salt Mini Jar Candle – (Value $8) – This candle is hand-poured, and smells of sea salt and the ocean. I’m typically pretty picky about my candle scents, but this one I actually like. I’ll burn it as soon as we go through the other ones we are currently burning. And, for $8, I can definitely see myself buying more if I fall in love with it.

August2014_Popsugar_product6

Goodbyn Purple Meal and Dipper Set – (Value $8) – This is a dishwasher safe and versatile, on the go food container. It’s a good size for properly portioning a small meal, or snacks. I could see this working great for packing snacks for kids, or for a small lunch to take to the office with you. I’m not sure if I’ll use it though. This may be the only thing in the box that ends up getting swapped.

August2014_Popsugar_product2

The Mason Jar Cookie Companie – (Value $12) – This bag of cookie mix is really big! I didn’t actually expect it to be as big as it is, but it does yield 24 cookies, so I guess that makes sense. It contains all the dry ingredients you would need, all you do is add butter and an egg to complete your cookies. I can’t wait to make these!

August 2014_popsugar_product1

Lollia At Last Perfumed Shower Gel – (Value $22) – Look how pretty the design is on this bottle! This shower gel is infused with shea butter and jojoba oil. I’m not typically one to spend a lot on shower gel, and I probably won’t buy it again once this runs out, but I sure will use it all up while I have it!  I expected a really strong scent, and was pleasantly surprised that this isn’t overwhelming.

Bite Beauty Lush Fruit Lip – (Value $22) – I’ve never used Bite products before, but have heard good things, so I’m excited to try this out! The color is a little intimidating looking in the tube, but I hear that it goes on pretty shear, and you can build it up. I also thought that it was pretty cool that this is a shade exclusive to the POPSUGAR Must Have Box, as it is in celebration of the box’s second birthday.

thinkThin Brownie Crunch High Protein Bar – (Value $1.99) – This is the special extra included in the box. This isn’t my favorite protein bar, but I’m not complaining. It has 20 grams of protein and zero grams of sugar.

Turkish-T Beach Towel – (Value $32) – This is the entire reason I caved and subscribed to POPSUGAR. I had been stalking this towel since I saw it included in the June box, and was thrilled to see that MySubscriptionAddiction was offering a code to receive this item free if you subscribed for the August box.

I really, loved this box, and I think POPSUGAR really hit this one out of the park. I calculate the value of  this box at $157.99 (including the turkish towel I received for free) which is a really great value! Here’s the hard part though…originally I had planned on only subscribing for this month, because I really can’t justify an ongoing subscription at this price. But, I fell in love with it this month, and know that I will be super disappointed if I cancel and then realize that the September box is just as amazing. Oh, what should I do! We’ll see…

If you’re interested in the September POPSUGAR Must Have Box it is available for order now, and you can use the promo code MustHaveYT for $10 off.

August 2014 Birchbox Review

2014-06-11 18_Fotor

Birchbox is one of my favorite subscription boxes. I’ve found some really great products that I use every day, that I otherwise wouldn’t have ever tried without sampling them first.

Here’s the first look at my August 2014 Birchbox. I received five products this month.

August’s theme was “Lighten Up.” It was all about not taking yourself too seriously, keeping your cool, and as they put it on their info card “laughing your way into fall”.

Laura Geller Beauty Cool Lids Cream Eyeshadow -(value $12.35) –  Birchbox allowed subscribers to pick an item this month, and this is what I picked. It’s really easy to apply, lasts a long time, and stays put. It’s just not my favorite color.

Harvey Prince Ageless Body Cream -($0.90) –  This product lives up to its name. It’s very moisturizing, and a little goes a very long way. It also smells amazing! It is kind of funny to me that I have received so many Harvey Prince products lately. I think this is the third Birchbox in a row where they have sent me something from this brand. I don’t really mind though, because I actually like most of what I’ve received.

nugg Beauty Revitalizing Face Mask – (value $2.99) – This brand has a variety of different facial masks, all in individual use pods. I received the Revitalizing face mask, and honestly it is the one I was the least interested in. The info card says that it should hydrate, and replenish dull, tired skin. However, after I used it my skin actually felt more dry then before. I also wasn’t a fan of the scent. It smelled too much like Vicks Vapor Rub, which I like…when I’m sick, but it’s not exactly something I enjoy on my face. I did appreciate the size of the pods (and if you have a way of sealing them up, or a spare empty container, you could easily get two uses out of each pod), and the texture and consistency of the product was nice. I’ll likely try a few of their other varieties, but won’t be purchasing this one.

Neil George Shampoo & Conditioner –  (each valued at $4.50) – I haven’t tried this yet. Though it is getting rave reviews, so I’m excited to. But on the other hand, I’ve received so many shampoo/conditioner samples from Birchbox lately, I can’t say I was thrilled to get another one. They’re always good to have on backup for travel though, so there’s that…

I estimate the value of this box at $25.24. Overall, I had mixed feelings about my August Birchbox. I wasn’t wowed by anything I received, but I’ll probably end up using all of it. So in that sense I guess it was a successful box, and definitely worth the $10 I paid for it.

August 2014 Ipsy Review

Ipsy_July2014

I’ve been subscribing to Ipsy for 3-4 months now. I gave them a shot for the same reason that I tried Birchbox…I wanted to try new products that I wouldn’t otherwise have tried or even known about.

Ipsy, like Birchbox, is only $10 a month and they send you around 5 (usually sample size) products packaged inside of a unique travel sized makeup bag (the Glam Bag). You can also review the products you sample for Ipsy Points which can be redeemed for bonus items in your Glam Bag. It’s an auto renewing subscription which you pay monthly for. You can also cancel any time.

Here’s what I received in my August 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag. I received five products + the bag. And, I thought this month’s bag was another cute one! I like it’s shape, plus who doesn’t love the orange polka dots?

July’s theme was “Beauty/Schooled.” I took that to mean it would be a kind of back to the basics type bag, which in my opinion, it was.

Ipsy_August2014_1

Klorane Dry Shampoo – (value $6.50) – I wish that I had a use for dry shampoo, because I know there are a lot of people out there who swear by it. But my super curly hair definitely wouldn’t do well with this. I’ve received it before in another box, and will be swapping it as well.

Dr. Brandt Pores No More –  (value $11.25) – I’ve received this before in a different subscription box. I’m probably in the minority, but I’m not that big of a fan of this product. It’s a foundation primer, and it’s not that it doesn’t do what it claims, it’s just super expensive. The full size retails for $45 for 1 oz. There are other primers on the market, that do exactly the same thing for far less money. This will probably be swapped.

Ipsy_August2014_2

Mongongo Lip Conditioner –  (value $5.50) – This lip balm is 100% natural and USDA certified organic, and is supposed to leave lips delicious, luscious and hydrated. I have a ridiculous amount of lip balms, and it seems that at times they are taking over my life, lol. Not sure if i’ll be adding it to the collection, or giving it away to a friend.

J. Cat Beauty Flying Solo Eye Shadow – (value $2.99) – This was full size, which I definitely appreciate. But I can’t say I’m all that excited to receive yet another eye shadow. This color doesn’t do much for me, so again, I’ll probably swap this.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara – (value $5.50) –  I was excited to receive this, as I’ve loved all of the Urban Decay products I’ve tried. It’s a new product for this brand. Even though I have a lot of other mascara samples floating around, I gave this one a try. And, you guys, I LOVE it!  I’ll definitely be buying a full size version when this sample runs out.

Overall, this is another Ipsy Glam Bag that I have mixed feelings about. I calculated the final value for this bag at $31.74 which was a pretty good value considering I only spent $10. However I’ll probably only keep/use one of the products that I received – the mascara. Though that was the highest value item I received so even if that is all I use, it seems that I still got my money’s worth. Also, I thought the Glam Bag itself was super adorable, and loved the shape and design. I keep tweaking my style profile, to improve the items I receive so that they more fit what I would like/use, but I still don’t think I’ve gotten it right.

Are you an Ipsy Glam Bag subscriber? What did you receive this month? What did you love (or not)?
