Julep Maven is a nail polish and beauty box. Every month you have a choice between several curated style profiles or you can customize your box. If you’d like to customize your box, I suggest signing up for a 3 month prepaid subscription! Julep Maven is one of my favorite subscription boxes for a few reasons. Every month they create and release a new line of polish, all built around a theme. I think it’s a great idea. Also, I’m a big fan of the fact that their polish formulas are vegan, and 5-free.

For October, they introduced The Black Magic Collection.

I’ll admit, I was underwhelmed by this collection. I guess I was expecting something more “Halloween-y” for October. Most of the collection looked similar to other colors that I already have. Since I’m not lucky enough to have a skipable My Maven account, I was still able to select a few colors that I liked enough to customize into my box.

Julep Maven subscription details:

The Cost: $24.99 a month ($19.99 a month with a 3-month subscription). Both options are customizable for new Mavens. I totally recommend the 3-month subscription. That’s what I have, and I love being able to pick exactly what I want, and getting the lowest price.

The Products: Nail polish and beauty items.

Ships to: US and Canada

Here’s the first look inside my October Julep Maven Box.

Here are the colors that I selected this month.

Photo Sep 23, 7 02 07 PMHere is the breakdown of what I received in this month’s box:

JulepMaven_October2014_product1

Nancy – (Value $14) – From Julep: Silvery sage metallic.

  • I love this color. It depends on the light but sometimes it leans silver, other times it leans green. It’s really pretty!

Ledi – (Value $14) – From Julep: Black pearl shimmer

  • My collection was lacking in black, so I was happy to add this shimmery black shade to the mix.

JulepMaven_October2014_gloss

Julep Lip Gloss- (Value $20) – I selected the color “Polished”

  • I had never tried Julep’s lip glosses, and was excited to try them. They released two new shades, and I selected “Polished” as you see in the pic above. The finish is actually a little more pink than the picture suggests, but I still kind of wish I had selected the other new shade. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll pick that one up later.

I chose the following as ad-ons:

JulepMaven_October2014_addons

Queen Ann – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – Lilac confetti microglitter

Misti – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – From Julep: Smoky blue-grey crème

  • JulepMaven_October2014_nailstickers

Cat Nail Decals – these were part of the Halloween theme, and aren’t actually offered for sale on the site (as far as I can tell). They’re super cute!

Because I purchased three add-ons, I received a beauty freebie. They sent:

JulepMaven_October2014_bonys

Catrina – (Value $14) – From Julep: Marigold yellow crème

Teri – (Value $14) – From Julep: Tropical coral pink crème

  • This is way prettier in person then the swatches on their site suggest. I had been wanting a pretty coral pink color, and am really happy this was part of the bonus this month.

So that was my box this month!

Julep Jewel Heist Mystery Box

Recently, Julep offered a new round of mystery boxes – The Jewel Heist Mystery Box.

Screenshot 2014-09-16 16.59.40

Typically I don’t purchase mystery boxes. I just don’t love the idea of spending money and not knowing what I’m getting. But I caved on this one. Anyone who purchased one of the boxes was eligible to win all twelve birthstone colors – including the three remaining ones that no one has seen. Plus, one grand prize winner will receive a pair of sapphire & diamond earrings. It was just too good of a deal to pass up.

Here is what I received in my box.

JewelHeistMysteryBox_Julep_2

Ink Gel eyeliner – ($22/$17.60 Maven) – A creamy jet-black eyeliner. I’m an eyeliner pencil kind of gal, so this gel pot isn’t really my thing. It has good value, I just won’t use it. I’ll probably swap it or pass it along to a friend.

Alma – ($14/$11.20 Maven) – Dijon mustard yellow crème. I think that mustard yellow is one of those shades that you either love or hate, there’s no in between. I fall in the love it camp. However, this is a dupe for me. I bought it a few weeks ago.

Lengthening Mascara – Espresso Brown – ($24/$5.99 Maven Sale) – Lash growth enhancement ingredients and micro-fiber applicator separates, lengthens, and conditions individual lashes to lock in moisture and protect from breakage. I don’t wear brown mascara, so this will be gifted as well.

Mask Noir – ($32/$25.60 Maven) – An antioxidant-rich peel-off black mask that leaves skin smoother, brighter, and deeply hydrated. I love facial masks, and this looks like a good one. I love that I received this in the mystery box.

Double Duty Makeup Brush – ($28/$22.40 Maven) – 2-in-1 tool contains two stackable brushes—a large tapered brush for streak-free foundation application and a flat concealer brush that offers precision coverage and control. Julep makes great brushes, and I love that this is two brushes in one. Again, this is another win for me.

Green Tea Facial Blotting Papers – ($10) Not sold separately – This isn’t something I would have purchased for myself, but they will definitely get used.

Overall, I was actually quite happy with this mystery box. I also really loved that it was heavy on the beauty and makeup products. I totally get that Julep is primarily a nail polish company, but they make great beauty products and I’m happy to try them out. Even though I’ll only use/keep half of the products, the value is still well worth what I spent on it.  I estimate the value of this box at $130/$92.79 Maven.

Initially, I had mixed feelings about this collection, but the more I looked at it the more I liked it. This is definitely a transition month into fall, so I expected less bright, and more muted colors. Is it just me, or does this collection also kind of scream an 80’s vibe? I was born in the 80’s though, so I can definitely get behind this. I have also really been interested in the satin finishes, and there were at least three of those featured this month.

JulepMaven_Sep2014_2

Here is the breakdown of what I received in this month’s box:

JulepMaven_Sep2014_4

Erin– (Value $14) – From Julep: Oyster grey crème.

  • I love grey polishes, and really didn’t have any in my collection. This is a really nice creme finish, and I’m excited to have it.

Quinn – (Value $14) – From Julep: Charcoal purple satin

  • As mentioned before, I’m really interested in different finishes right now, so this purple satin was right up my alley.

JulepMaven_Sep2014_5

Ryan – (Value $14) – From Julep: Overcast teal satin

  • I’m not as in love with this as I thought I would be, but I also think it’s a color that will grow on me the more I use it.

Ana – (Value $14) – From Julep: White jagged glitter top coat

  • Ana was part of this collection, but was only available as an add-on. I am in love with this top coat. It’s a little edgy, and I love that it’s white.

JulepMaven_Sep2014_9

Julep also released a new line of lip products this month called Plush Pout Lip Crayons. I feel like lip crayons have become a trend lately, and I was excited to see if Julep’s version was any better than the alternatives on the market.  These are supposed to be full-coverage lip crayons with a moisturizing core, and long-lasting with a semi-gloss finish.

I ordered the Magenta Plum color, but actually received the Almond Nude shade.  I was a little disappointed, but it wasn’t that big of a deal because they’re shipping me the correct color, and I get to keep this one. Typically, this type of nude shade wouldn’t work with my skin tone, so I haven’t tried it yet. I’m still debating whether or not I want to keep this one or trade/gift it to someone who would enjoy it more. I’m super excited to try out the Magenta Plum color once I actually receive it!

I chose the following as ad-ons:

JulepMaven_Sep2014_6

Chloe – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – Warm cocoa frost

Lola – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – From Julep: Moonlit night blue satin

  • Lola is a beautiful midnight blue! I can see this being a favorite for fall.

Because I purchased three add-ons (including Ana), I received a beauty freebie. They sent:

JulepMaven_Sep2014_7

Daria – (Value $14) – From Julep: Dark slate grey crème

Candace – (Value $14) – From Julep: Golden chocolate microglitter

So that was my box this month!

If you’re new to Julep Maven, don’t forget to use code FREEBOX to receive your welcome box for free (you just pay for shipping or get free shipping when you sign up for a 3 month subscription).

This month was the last of my pre-paid three-month subscription. I’m still debating whether or not I will continue my subscription or not. I probably will, but just haven’t decided for sure yet.

For August, they introduced The Wanderlust Collection.

The Wanderlust Collection

Firs off, I should mention that I am a sucker for any and all things jewel toned. I think that those super saturated colors really compliment any skin tone, but especially a medium one (like mine), and I just love them. I knew at first glance that I was going to have a hard time narrowing down my selections this month. I was also happy to see that there were no creme polishes in this month’s options!  Typically, creme is my go-to, and because of that my collection is kind of overloaded with creme finishes. Not to mention, that last months box was heavy on the cream selections, so it was nice to see different finishes highlighted this month.

Here’s the first look inside my August Julep Maven Box. First of all, isn’t the tissue paper just gorgeous? I’m totally going to save it, lol.

August2014_JulepMaven_FirstLook

This month my selections were all over the place, and really didn’t fall into one particular box type. I think each of my three selections came from different box types. There’s a little Boho Glam in there, a little Bombshell, and some Classic with a Twist too! Does this give you an idea that I really appreciate being able to customize my box? Otherwise, I’d be spending a ton more money and ending up with polishes I wasn’t in love with.

Here are the colors that I selected this month.

My Selections

And, here is the first look at my August Maven Box.

August2014_JulepMaven_box

There were a few problems with my shipment this month. I didn’t receive one of the add-ons I purchased (Sienna), and I didn’t receive the bonus product for purchasing three addons, and they ended up sending an eyeliner that I didn’t order. But, at the end of the day, it’s not that big of a deal, plus they are sending me the items I didn’t receive (and I get to keep the eyeliner!). I think the mixups ended up being a happy accident, actually. I ended up really loving the eyeliner, which I probably wouldn’t have normally purchased.

Here is the rest of what I received in this month’s box:

August2014_JulepMaven_1

India– (Value $14) – From Julep: Freshwater blue shimmer.

  • This blue is so stunning! I haven’t seen another blue polish out there quite like it. I had to have it, and since I’ve heard that it sold out very quickly, I’m super excited that I got it.

Tazeen – (Value $14) – From Julep: Full-coverage Bollywood gold glitter

  • Tazeen is a really pretty gold glitter. I thought that this would be one of my favorites from this month, but actually I’m a little less thrilled by it. It’s pretty for sure, but I’m not crazy about the formula. It seems to be really gloopy (is that a word?), but I haven’t used it yet. I’ll reserve final impressions until I actually give it a try.

Avni – (Value $14) –  From Julep: African violet shimmer

  • I’ve been really in to purple polish colors this summer. I didn’t have a deep purple in my collection, and am really happy with how saturated this purple is. I really like it.

August2014_JulepMaven_eyeglider

So, they sent one of their new Gel Eye Gliders by accident, and then let me keep it when I called to notify them. So I got to try it out, even though I really wasn’t interested in new eyeliners (I already have so many that I like). I’m so glad I did though! I really like this pencil, and the color I got – Plum – is a really nice color. It’s super easy to use, with a smooth application.

I chose the following as ad-ons:

August2014_JulepMaven_2

Sushmita – (Value $14 – added on for $6.99) – From Julep: Pashmina pink silk

  • This was also from the August Wanderlust Collection, and I thought the rich pink color in a silk finish was too pretty to pass up.

Sienna – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – From Julep: Sophisticated, shimmery gold

  • This had been on my wish list for a while, so I was happy to see it listed as an add-on. It’s not pictured though because it wasn’t actually included in my shipment, but they’re sending it separately.

Cameron – (Value $14 – added on for $4.99) – From Julep: Silver lilac stardust (matte glitter)

  • Honestly, I only added this so that I could max out my 3 add-ons and qualify for the free surprise gift. However, I thought that the idea of a matte glitter was interesting enough to try out.

If you’re new to Julep Maven, don’t forget to use code FREEBOX to receive your welcome box for free (you just pay for shipping or get free shipping when you sign up for a 3 month subscription).

Next month (September) will be the last of my pre-paid 3-box subscription. I hope it’s a great month, as I’ll have to decide wether to renew for another three months after that. So, the pressure is on, Julep! Lol. I do have a feeling that next month we’ll start to see a transition to more fall-like colors (or at least, here’s hoping), so I am excited for that. Also, that’s a good thing…I don’t know how many more bright summery colors my collection can handle.

And as a side note, I know that Julep transitioned to a new shipping facility and have experienced some shipping and inventory problems this month. I know my box was incorrect (they forgot to include two items, and sent one that I didn’t actually order), though they did rectify the situation. I think that compared to the problems other Maven subscribers have had with their August Maven shipments I have relatively little to complain about. But I do sincerely hope that before the September boxes are shipped that they work out all of the kinks they experienced this month (and there appear to be many to work out).

July Julep Maven Review

Julep Maven is a nail polish and beauty box. Every month you have a choice between several curated style profiles or you can customize your box. If you’d like to customize your box, I suggest signing up for a 3 month prepaid subscription! Julep Maven is one of my favorite subscription boxes for a few reasons. Every month they create and release a new line of polish, all built around a theme. I think it’s a great idea. Also, I’m a big fan of the fact that their polish formulas are vegan, and 5-free.

For July, they introduced The Poolside Collection. The tagline for July was “Summer’s not a season, it’s a state of mind.”

Julep Maven July Collection

I’m not all that dareing when it comes to polish colors, expecially for manicures. I typically stick to the basics on my finger nails. But, oh my how great would a lot of these colors look on toes by the poolside?  I really liked this collection. I thought it was a good mix between modern summer classics, and more daring/bright options.

Here’s the first look inside my July Maven Box. I loved the aqua blue tissue paper, it just reminded me of being poolside…which also reminded me that I need a vacation, lol.

Julep_JulyFirstLook_Fotor

This month I chose the Modern Beauty box, because I wanted both lotions that were included, and I added on two of the polish colors from the collection as well as a color fan for an additional cost. I went this rout, because after crunching the numbers, adding the polishes came out slightly less costly then if I had chosen to get a polish box and add on the lotions. Does that make sense? Typically, I don’t do add-ons, as the $$ can add up, but this time around I really did want everything I selected.

Here is what I received in my July Julep Maven Box.

Julep_JulyLook_Fotor

At first glance nothing looked strange. I know that I had maxed out my ad-ons, so I was expecting a free gift of some kind, which I did get in the form of a pretty dark blue, and a white polish (seen in the bottom right corner). However, I noticed that rather large, interesting, lable down box, towards the bottom. “What on earth is that?” I found myself wondering…

You guys!! I opened it up and saw that I had won a pair of Ray-Bans Wayfarer sunglasses!  I completely forgot that they were randomly selecting 150 Julep Maven Subscribers to win a free pair. I don’t ever win things, so this was a really awesome surprise! Not to mention the fact that these sunglasses retail for around $15o (what?!?).

Julep_JulyUnboxing_Fotor

Seriously, I’ve been wanting new sunglasses, and these are absolutely perfect! I am so excited! And, my birthday is this month, so it is like an early birthday present for me, and who doesn’t love birthday surprises?

Julep_July_Ray-Bans_Fotor

Here is the rest of what I received in this month’s box:

Julep_BareBodyMilk_Fotor

Julep_MintConditionPediCreme_Fotor

Bare Body Milk– (Value $24) – From Julep: An ultra hydrating body lotion. The lightweight, fast-absorbing formula leaves a soft, silky finish that’s not heavy or greasy.

  • I love this lotion. It is a thinner lotion then I am used to, but is definitely lightweight, and absorbes really fast. It smells amazing, and I’m sure I’ll be buying more once I run out.

Mint Condition Pedi Creme – (Value $20) – From Julep: Provides soothing moisture and gentle exfoliation for rough, dry skin

  • I haven’t used this yet, but I’m excited to. My feet need some serious TLC so that they’re flip flop ready for summer.

Julep_JulyColors_Fotor

I chose the following as ad-ons:

Braiden – (Value $14) – A dark Gray Graphite stardust (textured matte glitter). I really love this polish!

Lissa – (value $14) – A tumbled turquoise crème. It is seriously one of the prettiest shades of polish that I’ve seen. It may be my new favorite for my toes for the summer.

Julep Color Fan – (value $8) – It’s not pictured, but we all know what a color fan looks like. I really needed this. It’s a great way to swatch colors in an easily accessable way. As an add-on to my box, I only paid $4 for it.

Julep_JulyAd-Ons_Fotor

Since I chose to purchase the maximum three add-ons to my box this month, I received a polish duo as a free gift. I got:

Octavia – (value $14) – A smoky indigo crème

Soraphine – (value $14) – A classic sheer white crème

Overall it was an AWESOME Julep Maven Box.
